Every semester, we work with the Dawson College Journeys Program to deliver a workshop to its annual cohort. Last semester, we worked on Bitsy games and taught the basic building blocks of game development. This time around, we focused on 3D modelling! Bringing our set of iPads, we taught 7th Gen Tech Design using Nomad.

Working with their professor, the students were asked to prepare a story beforehand – these stories all contain objects or characters that the students would recreate in 3D during our workshop. While the focus was on tech design and objects, some students felt more creative with characters. When this happens, we often encourage students to engage in what they like because we want students to meaningfully engage with the tools we are teaching – we don’t lend our iPads out and the workshops are short with only four sessions of two hours! So, when we see excitement, we encourage it!

While it was four sessions, we split the group in two as the cohort this year has grown so much! Splitting the group allowed us to have more one-on-one time with the participants although this group was already on it with peer-support. Some students modelled cars, others smaller pieces of jewelry or masks! In addition to their 3D rendered images, we also went ahead and 3D printed their models so that they could see the next steps that can be taken or perhaps spark new ideas for a future project.

Until next time, Dawson!
