ESUMA / 7th Gen Character Design ++

The Skins team is off to Akulivik to teach 7th Gen Character Design++ in collaboration with ESUMA! Throughout a week of workshops, we worked with the young children to learn the basics of designing video games maps and characters. Although we anticipated to begin on iPads sooner, we quickly realized the age group we are working with, ages 5-12, requires more tactile activities first!

For the first 3 sessions we focused on traditional mediums, including sketching character designs on paper, sculpting with clay and creating 3D maps. For the last 2 sessions we moved on to the iPads to introduce digital media through the drawing application Procreate. Even though our participants were younger than groups we normally work with, we made sure to adjust our curriculum so that it was engaging and fun for all ages. The students had fun experimenting with Procreate and made some beautiful character designs and multi-media paintings.
