Dawson / Pixel Art and Game Design with Bitsy
Video Game Design
The Skins team returns to Dawson College to host another workshop, this time using the mini game maker, Bitsy. Over the course of 6 sessions, students learned the fundamentals of pixel art and game design in order to create their own game from scratch. They were first tasked to create their own art assets including the characters, items and even backgrounds. Learning to create pixel art provided students a fun yet challenging way to display their creativity in a constrained art style. Afterwards, the students used them to create a short game, aiming to have 3 explorable rooms that would follow a story.
Throughout the workshop, students were encouraged to explore Bitsy’s game engine and learn the basics of programming logic. By the end of the workshop, they were able to create a wide variety of creatives games using various conditionals and basic variables. With stories ranging from helping out our family, to solving mazes and saving cats, we were so excited to see the creativity and enthusiasm of the students!
