7th Gen Character Design

Workshop Type: 7th Gen

Location: Kahnawake, QC

Dates: 2023-12 to 2024-04

Duration: 5 sessions, a total of 10 hours

With the new year rolling in, we worked with the students to continue their character designs in Blender. Showing students how to sculpt on Blender, their characters finally leave the 2D realm and into 3D!

While our team handles the UV mapping and rigging portion of 3D modelling, we used small, wrapped chocolates to demonstrate what we were doing behind the scenes. The designs we see on wrapped chocolates, like the small Santa Claus or even Easter bunnies, are all great examples of how UV mapping works. When unfolding the wrapper (carefully!), the design ‘looks’ warped. The design is made to wrap around a structured base. For rigging, we constructed the skeletal body of the models so that they can move and come to life.

We asked the students to pose their models, and helped refine. Then, we brought these models outside of cyberspace by 3D printing them! Once the models arrived, students took home a small token of their hard work.

We’re excited to continue working with KSS and show more ways of working with Blender, and other software.
